Girl on the train

I was on the train with a friend from my Japanese class and a young girl with some piercings in her lips dressed in black and white lacy clothes was standing in front of us. I started talking to her by asking “Is this fashion you’re wearing ‘Goth-Loli’?” and immediately about 3 or 4 ladies sitting around us got interested in where this conversation was going to go.

The girl told me that it wasn’t actually goth-loli but it was called something else, which escapes me now. Something like “princess style”. I went through her outfit, pointing out that the white ribbon around her waist gave her a lolita look but her black umbrella and other dark clothing gave a more gothic look. I also complimented her shoes with little black roses on them. After a while I was just talking to Kathryn and the girl started laughing at our strange over-use of phrases we’d picked up from anime. When the older ladies left, I told the girl that it was alright to sit down beside me if her feet were hurting, as she had said that the shoes weren’t very comfortable. Her name was Satomi and she was a first-year university student studying English conversation so I spoke to her in some very simple English and got her to do an introduction (“jiko shoukai”) in English for us.

Then we got to her station and she had to leave. That’s probably about the twentieth time I’ve fallen in love since I got here. Japanese girls are so lovely when they’re not whoring themselves out to foreigners in Roppongi :-)

I’m glad to hear that your experience in Japan isn’t like Bill Murray’s in Lost in Translation.

Reviewing your postings with folks here in blistering sunshine. Much mirth & laughter together with great admiration for your eloquence and turn of phrase. You getting around my Man! The Da reminds s me that when we were in Arnhem in ‘72 (I was 8) as we wandered into a certain part of the town by accident he told me to wave hello to the “nice ladies” in the windows! Big question is where’s your Da when you go Bush? Said he was probably still in bed getting over his Jet Lag! Take good care. All best J.

  • Don’t worry about him, there are lots of tours organised by the travel agency :-)
